Pilates was developed by Joseph (Joe) Hubertus Pilates. Born in Germany in 1880, Joe was a small sickly child, suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever.   His name had been “Pilatu” (Greek surname), which his family changed to using"Pilates". His father was a famous gymnast and his mother was a naturopath professional (complementary and alternative medicine).  Dedicating his life to improving his physical strengh, Joe studied anatomy, gymnastics and yoga.

In 1914, he was sent to a German National camp to work as a nurses’ aid. To help strengthen the soldiers, he developed mat exercise programs.  Later in life, Joe worked with professional dancers in New York City. His exercise regimen evolved into a powerful rehabilitation tool using a principle of core stabilization that addressed posture, muscle performance and motor control. These are the same underlying concepts that are basic to most orthopedic rehabilitation and therapies.

The main goal of a Pilates' exercise program is core strengthening. The core muscles include the abdominals, back extensors, hip flexors, diaphragm and hip musculature.

  • Breathing Exercises help strengthen the diaphragm and the abdominals.
  • Stretching is emphasized in the Pilates exercise and especially during our cool down time.
  • Resistance is used in our classes, such as weighted balls, bands, free weights and large exercise balls.
  • Posture and balance are practiced throughout the exercises.

Pilates is a FUN WAY to stay in shape, to challenge your physical strength, enhance flexibility and to keep your youthfulness for years to come!!!
